We love answering questions about foresight!

To be blunt, if you are a leader, and you aren’t thinking about the future, what are you doing? There is always more day-to-day stuff ready to fill your time, but when it comes to thinking about the long term success of your project, team, company or life: if not you, who? As a bonus, by improving your awareness of emerging external issues, building pictures of alternative futures, and developing resilient visions and plans, over time you’ll find there is less fire-fighting to be done in the future.

Foresight is about being prepared for all possible futures rather than trying to precisely predict just one future.  It is Futures Thinking, not “Future Thinking” by design. Anyone telling you they can tell the future shouldn’t be trusted, but by thinking about possible futures in a structured way that utilises evidence and expertise you can cut down on risks caused by uncertainty and open up new opportunities.

That’s entirely up to you! Some techniques can be done using a sheet of paper in a few minutes, others benefit from gathering large numbers of expert opinions. You’ll gain greater benefits the more you put in. Foresight activities tend to have increasing returns when part of a Foresight-Ecosystem, where they can mutually support and reinforce each other, but even a short one-off activity can be revolutionary if done in the right way.
